No Plans of an All Electric Vehicle Fleet by 2030: Government of India

Last week, a Toyota official said that the Indian government’s dream to have a fleet of all-electric vehicles on Indian roads by 2030 was a bit of a long shot. A number of other people have raised similar skepticism about the government’s ambitious dream.

Until now, there has been no official response to these opinions from the government side. However, that was until minister of state for heavy industries Babul Supriyo came up with a written response on the same matter in the Lok Sabha.

“There are, at present, no plans under consideration of the Department of Heavy Industry to make all vehicles in the country powered by electricity by 2030,” said Supriyo.

It is interesting to note that earlier Livemint reported Union Minister Piyush Goyal as stating that the world is embracing electric vehicles and India is already working on a roadmap to bring a fleet of electric vehicles on Indian roads.

“Only electric car by 2030…existing cars may take a little longer to replace. But the government is working on a framework to see what we can do on promoting electric vehicle. Niti Aayog is currently tasked with preparing a futuristic vision for electric vehicles,” Goyal had said.
