Data tech is key to electric vehicle rollout, says techUK

Industry body, techUK has welcomed the government’s electric vehicle initiative and believes the tech sector has a big role to play in driving down national emission levels.

The headline grabber at today’s Zero Emission Vehicle Summit in Birmingham was a commitment from Prime Minister Theresa May invest £106 million in the development of zero emission vehicles.

Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling has also announced the creation of a Electric Vehicle Energy Taskforce.

This is intended to bring together the energy and automotive industries to plan for the changes that will take place as a result of rising electric vehicle use.

Matthew Evans, head of SmarterUK at techUK, which will participate in the Taskforce, highlighted the role of data technology in creating the infrastructure to support the adoption of electric vehicles.

“Data is at the heart of ensuring that we deliver consumer-centred charging infrastructure which facilitates the widespread adoption of electric vehicles, at the lowest possible cost,” said Evans.

He also said that the tech sector is already contributing to the national agenda to lower emissions.

“The tech sector already plays a leading role in driving down our emissions and we look forward to working with our partners in the energy and automotive sector to ensuring the UK is able to exceed its targets around electric vehicles and progress faster down the road to zero,” said Evans.
