New driverless electric vehicle to run in IIT Delhi campus

Last year, the three–Reliance Jio, Ericsson and IIT Delhi had partnered to demonstrate a driverless car using 5G technology. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi is soon going to run a driverless electric vehicle within the campus. The institute intends to run this between two points initially. “This is a project that would showcase the autonomous EV technology and simultaneously save the cost of the driver,” V Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi.

The IIT is looking at a time frame of six months to get the EV up and running. “The project has already started and we hope that in the next 6 months we would be able to run this driverless vehicle,” said Rao.

The institute already runs EVs within the campus and intends to convert these into driverless EVs. Last year, the institute had showcased a driverless vehicle using network from Ericsson and 5G test bed from Reliance Jio.

“Last year, the three–Reliance Jio, Ericsson and IIT Delhi had partnered to demonstrate a driverless car using 5G technology,” he said.

Soon after developing the driverless EV, the IIT is looking at deploying this technology for multiple applications.
