World’s first 05025M size monolithic ceramic capacitor

Capacitor with a capacitance value of 1 μF

Murata 1Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has developed the world’s first 05025M size (0.5 × 0.25 × 0.25 mm) monolithic ceramic capacitor with a capacitance value of 1 μF (X5R characteristics, 6.3 V rated voltage), and started mass production in April 2016.

Mobile electronics such as smartphones and wearable devices are becoming smaller, thinner, and more sophisticated. With these advancements, the number of components mounted on the substrate is increasing, driving the need for even smaller and thinner components. Accordingly, Murata increased the accuracy of its proprietary elemental technology and developed the world’s first 05025M size monolithic ceramic capacitor, thereby achieving a capacitance value of 1 μF (X5R characteristics*1, 6.3 V rated voltage) in the world’s smallest component volume. With this new capacitor, Murata will again contribute to the continuing miniaturization and sophistication of mobile electronics.

*1 X5R characteristics: A temperature characteristic in which the capacitance change rate is ±15% when the operating temperature range is -55°C to 85°C.

    Features

    1. The 05025M size, the first of its kind in the world, is between the 0603M size (0.6 × 0.3 mm) and the 0402M size (0.4 × 0.2 mm). As with other sizes, the product has an aspect ratio of 2:1*2, enabling high-density mounting on the substrate.
    2. An aspect ratio of 2:1 is most efficient when components are arranged lengthwise and crosswise on the substrate. This ratio enables high production efficiency in the manufacturing process; stable supply and future cost reductions can also be expected.
    3. The smallest product with a capacitance value of 1 μF (X5R characteristics, 6.3V rated voltage) used to be the 0603M size (0.6 × 0.3 mm). The 05025M size (0.5 × 0.25 mm) cuts the component volume ratio by approximately half, achieving the world’s smallest component volume for a monolithic ceramic capacitor of the same characteristics.
