UJALA Scheme: Govt. to Distribute 1 Crore Led Bulbs in State

In a major initiative to save power, the Uttarakhand Government is planning to distribute one crore LED bulbs in the State.

The Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), the Government of India enterprise entrusted to provide these energy efficiency lamps has distributed 41.13 Lakh LEDs in the State under the Unnat Jeevan by Affordable LEDs and Appliances (UJALA) project.

To review the progress of the implementation of the scheme in Uttarakhand, the Secretary Power, Radhika Jha took a meeting with the officials concerned at the secretariat on October 27, 2017.

In the meeting, she directed the officers to ensure that the target of providing 1 crore LEDs in the State is achieved. She said that in the state 67 counters selling LEDs are functioning and soon the number of such counters would be increased to 100.

Jha said that the counters of LEDs should be opened in all districts of Uttarakhand Renewable Energy Development Agency (UREDA). She also directed that the LED distribution counters should be opened in all Municipal corporations and Councils. The state government had recently made usage of energy efficiency devices compulsory in all government offices.

The EESL is the nodal agency for running the UJALA scheme through power distribution companies and other channels of retail like e-marketplaces. It releases regular appeals to the consumers not to pay any amount over and above the prices fixed by EESL for the UJALA appliances.

The UJALA scheme was launched by the Government of India on January 5, 2015, with a target of replacing 77 crore inefficient bulbs with Energy Efficient LED Bulbs.
