Indian Electronics Industry: A riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma

Make in India, Digital India has filled Indian eyes with hope, pride and dream of better living but will it carry its soul in long run? The question is under shadow with Assocham-NEC report of import to the reach USD 300 billion by 2020, which contradict the IESA –FY joint report of Feb 2017,which says ESDM sector size (Electronics products TM + Electronics products TE + Electronic component market revenues from local manufacturing + Design services market revenues + EMS services revenues) is projected to reach US$400 billion by 2023 – 2026.

The Demand- Supply graph for Indian consumer is growing non- linearly as Assocham report showed that while demand for electronic products in India is expected to grow at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 41 percent to reach USD 400 billion by 2020, domestic production is growing at a CAGR of 27 percent.

Electronic products in India has a huge demand, right from basic commodities like TV, Smart-phones to increasing demands of POS (Point of Sale)  devices has manifold the quest of electronics product.

In spite of many efforts by government in terms of new policies, new international collaboration and attractive investment plans still we have to import that too in bulk is not digestible. Are we really on the way to Make in India and zero import? At-least we should cater the demand of our local customers by increasing local production significantly. The semiconductor FAB manufacturing will really take us towards zero import but for that it has to be practically on floor rather than being on papers.
