Ringing Bells which announced that it was going to launch a sub-500 smart phone launched  Freedom 251 in India on Wednesday. It  is the world’s most affordable Android phone. The phone amazingly just costs Rs.251, which makes it the most affordable smartphone in the world. The phone will available for pre-booking on February 18 6AM onwards from the company’s website. The news of the cheapest smart phone in the world has no doubt doing the rounds which has caused the company’s website to slow down, which is probably making the company very cheery.

Earlier the phone was expected to be priced at around Rs.500, but Ringing Bells has literally halved that amount.

While one may imagine a crippled spec sheet, the phone seemingly has some decent hardware specifications. It has a 4-inch IPS display with a 960×540 pixels resolution. The device is also powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core processor and is coupled with 1GB RAM and 8GB of internal storage. It also offers a microSD card slot. The phone also has a 1,450mAh battery. On the back, the phone sports a 3.2-megapixel camera and a 0.3-megapixel camera on the front. Amazingly, the phone also supports 3G connectivity.

Software wise, the phone runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop and it also comes preloaded with a bunch of apps. It comes preloaded with the Google suite of apps that include YouTube and the Play Store. It also gets WhatsApp out of the box in addition to a couple of apps from the government. These include the Swachch Bharat app and a Women Safety app.

As amazing the price is, Freedom says that it will also provide a 1-year warranty for the phone and also has over 650 service centres for the device.

“Empower citizens, even in the remotest rural and semi-urban centres of India, with the latest in digital technology at incredible affordable prices and cascade knowledge, news and current issues so that all experience the confidence of inclusive growth and equal opportunity – In short, innovative solutions for a Brighter tomorrow,” says Ringing Bells on its website.
