Jio Platforms to Use NXP Multicore Processors in 5G NR O-RAN

Jio Platforms said it will implement Dutch chipmaker NXP Semiconductors’ Layerscape family of multicore processors in its 5G New Radio (NR) O-RAN small cell solution for powering new RAN networks, under a collaborative partnership to enable a wide range of 5G use cases for broadband access, as well as Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

Jio Platforms, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), said it has leveraged NXP’s Layerscape processors in its new 5G NR solutions.

The 5G NR solutions, as per JPL, have been successfully tested at 100MHz channel bandwidth in the 3.5GHz spectrum with peak data rates of more than 1Gbps, translating into increased performance for a wide range of segments and innovative applications.

It added that the 5G NR radio solutions are well-positioned for the next-generation RAN networks and will provide increased indoor and outdoor performance while enabling new 5G use cases.

“5G New Radio solutions require flexibility in terms of the platform features, efficiency and rich tooling, which NXP brings to the table. Along with NXP, Jio Platforms has developed state-of-the art radio products, which are compliant to the 3GPP as well as to the O-RAN standards. We have a history of close collaboration with NXP, and we look forward to strengthening it further.” said Aayush Bhatnagar, senior vice president of Jio Platforms.

“The collaboration with Jio to develop, test and deploy 5G solutions underscores the power of our Layerscape products and the growing ability of NXP’s antenna-to-processor portfolio to accelerate new 5G deployments.” said Tareq Bustami, senior vice president and general manager, Network Edge at NXP Semiconductors.

“Jio and NXP are both focused on technical and innovation leadership, and this combined systems integration demonstrates our shared vision to deliver efficient 5G NR solutions to the India market,” Bustami added.

At the recently held 44th Annual General Meeting of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), chairman Mukesh Ambani said Jio has tested its homegrown 5G solution together with its partners in India and achieved speeds of more than 1Gbps. He underlined that once Jio’s 5G solutions are proven at Indian-scale, it will consider exporting it to global markets.
