Three-axis magnetic sensor adds stability to drone designs

The MMC5883MA integrates on-chip signal processing and an I2C fast-mode (40kHz) digital interface for direct connection to a system microprocessor.

Memsic has introduced three-axis magnetic sensor, the MMC5883MA, which the company said achieves high accuracy, low noise and minimal current consumption to meet the demands of industrial and drone applications.

This latest addition to the company’s AMR (anisotropic magnetoresistive) sensor family provides 16-bit operation over a wide ±8-gauss operating range with linearity of ±0.2% FSR, hysteresis of 0.2% FSR and repeatability of 0.2% FSR on each of its three axes, according to the company.

Housed in a tiny 3.0mm × 3.0mm × 1.0mm LGA package, the MMC5883MA integrates on-chip signal processing and an I2C fast-mode (40kHz) digital interface for direct connection to a system microprocessor. It allows engineers to add stability and direction sensing to their designs, leveraging fast algorithms for hard- and soft-iron interference correction to achieve more precise and faster heading determination.

The MMC5883MA operates over a temperature range of -40°C to 85°C from a supply voltage of 2.16V to 3.6V. Current consumption is only 20µA at a data rate of 7 samples/s. Further, the part exhibits an extremely low noise level of just 0.4 milligauss RMS.

The three-axis magnetic sensor is now in production and available immediately. Devices premounted on prototyping boards can be purchased directly from MEMSIC. Designers can evaluate and log data using MEMSIC’s universal evaluation board.

A datasheet for the MMC5883MA was not available at the time of this announcement.
