Toshiba aims Cortex-M3 MCUs at motor control

Licensed from Silicon Storage Technology, the flash is Super Flash, where the code flash is rewritable up to 10,000 times and the data up to 100,000 times, and data flash is re-writable in parallel with instruction execution.

There is also 64kbyte of RAM (with parity), plus 2kbyte of back-up, which is sustained in certain low-power modes.

Toshiba is calling the family, M3H Group 2, saying: “Toshiba launched the first M3H Group with 30 products for consumer and industrial device applications in May 2016. The newly launched second M3H group offers greater performance than the first group.”

Both groups have a Cortex-M3, with Group 1 (part numbers TMPM3H(number)xxxx) operating at up to 40MHz from 32-128kbyte flash, and Group 2 (part numbers s TMPM3H(letter)xxxx) products with more flash and operating up to 80MHz.

The new parts, amongst many peripherals, have two 8bit DACs, 10-21 12bit ADC inputs (1.5μs conversion at 40MHz), a sample-and-hold, a programmable motor controller (with three-phase PWM, synchronized with the 12bit ADC), timers (16 and 32bit), and a host of serial interfaces (six UART, 2-4x I2C, 1-5 channels TSPI).

On top of this, there is a self-diagnosis function that checks the reference voltage in the ADC, a RAM parity function to detect errors during memory reads, and a single channel CRC calculator, intended together to help products comply with the IEC 60730 functional safety standard. Operation is across 2.7 to 5.5V and -40 to 85°C.

Toshiba plans to release other groups of MCUs, for high-speed data processing communication control, and devices equipped with high-precision analogue circuits for low- to medium-speed motor control.
