    Micron: Setting up $2.75 billion chip assembly facility in India

    Micron Technology, a prominent computer storage chip manufacturer, has unveiled its plans to construct a state-of-the-art assembly and test facility in Gujarat, India. The company intends to invest up to $825 million in this project, which is expected to commence its phased construction in 2023. Micron’s new facility will encompass 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space and is slated to become operational in late 2024.

    The establishment of this assembly and test facility in Gujarat marks a significant milestone for Micron and the Indian semiconductor industry. The facility will play a crucial role in meeting the demand for both DRAM and NAND products from domestic and international markets. By leveraging the government’s “Modified Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) Scheme,” Micron will receive substantial fiscal support of 50% of the project cost from the Central government, with an additional 20% provided by the state of Gujarat.

    The economic impact of Micron’s investment is substantial, with the creation of up to 5,000 direct jobs at the facility and an additional 15,000 jobs in the community over the coming years. The investment will contribute to India’s semiconductor landscape and foster the growth of a thriving semiconductor ecosystem. Ashwini Vaishnaw, India’s Minister of IT and Railways, emphasized the transformative nature of Micron’s investment and its potential to generate high-tech and construction employment opportunities.

    The facility’s primary focus will be on the conversion of wafers into ball grid array (BGA) integrated circuit packages, memory modules, and solid-state drives. This underscores the facility’s importance in advancing semiconductor manufacturing capabilities within India. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, India’s Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, lauded this development as a major milestone in India’s journey toward becoming a “Semiconductor Nation.” He highlighted the progress made in India’s semiconductor ecosystem following the announcement of the Semiconductor Vision by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the substantial investment of INR 76,000 crore to catalyze its growth.

    The semiconductor industry has become indispensable to various sectors and plays a crucial role in enhancing our lives through technological advancements. With nearly 2,000 chips designed annually and over 20,000 engineers engaged in chip design and verification, India has emerged as a prominent hub for semiconductor design. Micron’s investment aligns with India’s ambitions to establish itself as a trusted global partner in the electronics and semiconductor value chain.

    In summary, Micron Technology’s plans to construct an assembly and test facility in Gujarat represents a significant boost to India’s semiconductor industry.
